Five Ways to Get the Most Out of the Emerald Coast

The Emerald Coast has more going on than most people realize. The water is warm, the fishing is serious, and the coastal dune lakes are unlike anything else in the continental US. These are the five experiences we'd put at the top of the list.

Deep-Sea Fishing Charter
Destin is one of the top fishing ports in the country. Half-day and full-day charters leave from the harbor most mornings. Red snapper, amberjack, and grouper are the usual targets.
Dolphin Cruise
Bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents of Choctawhatchee Bay. Sunset cruises run about 90 minutes and almost always deliver. Book through the Destin Harbor Boardwalk.
Paddleboarding the Coastal Dune Lakes
Western Lake and Grayton Beach State Park offer calm, clear water for paddleboarding. The dune lakes are a rare ecosystem found only here and in a few spots worldwide.
Snorkeling at the Jetties
The East Pass Jetties in Destin are one of the best free snorkeling spots on the Gulf. Visibility is good most days, and you'll find sheepshead, flounder, and the occasional sea turtle.
Sunset Sail from Destin Harbor
Several sailboats and catamarans offer two-hour sunset sails out of Destin Harbor. The Gulf turns a deep orange most evenings. Bring a drink and go slow.
Kayaking Henderson Beach State Park
Henderson Beach has a launch point for kayaks right off the sugar-white sand. Paddle along the shoreline in the morning before the crowds arrive and the wind picks up.
